Tusheti - to Omalo
Almost everyone who wants to ride Enduro in Georgia will seriously consider this goal. One of the most dangerous, but also one of the most beautiful roads in Georgia for Enduros. In the summer, however, it can get crowded, not to mention the fact that once you've made it, the weather closes the road again for the way back. So generally plan some time. If you want to do a little Enduro riding at the top...think about the fuel first! We would also not drive from Lechuri to the Abano Pass, at least the first time, in heavy rain or under time pressure (getting to the guesthouse you have booked for).
Route: Easy to find...turn north from the 43 in Pshaveli towards the mountains. There is only this "road" over the Abano Pass. You can have already taken the 43 from Tbilisi, or you can come from Sighnaghi, both nice.
Svaneti - to Ushguli
Ushguli.... Highest inhabited village in Europe. Almost as mystical as Omalo. Svaneti has a great landscape and you should also see the village of defensive towers.
Route: One can easily reach Ushguli via Mestia from the east side. However, our tip is to ride from Kutaisi from the west to Ushguli. There is very little traffic (in contrast to the eastern approach) and it is beautiful. From Kutaisi take the 16 on the Rioni river to Zageri (refuel there again), continue via Lentechi and the Zagari pass to Ushguli.
David Gareja - Cave monastery
In the east of Rustavi in a steppe landscape directly on the Azerbaijani border is the David Gareja Cave Monastery, which has a special meaning for Georgians. Maybe the monastery isn't quite as spectacular as Vardia, but of course the journey is the destination. If you come from the west, you have a great mountain approach via Akhaltsikhe down into the steppe landscape behind Rustavi. If you have visited David Gareja, you can continue through the steppe to Sighnaghi in the heart of Kakheti. From Batumi you then go “across” Georgia, which is of course not a day trip. But Enduro hiking of the very best.
Route for those in a hurry: The 1 to Akhaltsikhe, then the 11 to Ninotsminda, then the 31 to Tbilisi and from there to Rustavi. From Rustavi take the 157 to Lemshveniera, from there the 158 to David Gareja.
Route for connoisseurs and navigation enthusiasts: The 1 to Akhaltsikhe via the Goderzi Pass is practically predetermined, and then you simply use your navigation on "side roads" across it.
Goderzi Pass
If you want to explore the country from Batumi, there are only two ways:
- Via the highway to Kutaisi or
- Via the 1 via the Goderzi Pass
Which path you choose depends on your goals and time. They are currently trying to develop Goderzi into a luxury ski area, but the nature and the road over the pass are still an experience. Time Batumi - Goderzi: 3 hours.
Varzia
Once you have ride over the Goderzi Pass, you will soon come across a new road. Curve after curve to Akhaltsikhe. You can take a break in the shadow of the castle and then continue on to Variza. Beautiful road next to a river, beautiful nature and of course the cave monastery.
